In 2011, Austwel partnered with long-term client Valero Refinery on a significant site enabling project: the transformation of a farmer’s field into a 600+ vehicle car park. This case study examines the challenges, solutions, and successful outcome of this project, showcasing Austwel’s expertise in civil engineering and site enabling.
Valero Refinery required a substantial increase in parking capacity to support its operations. The available land was a farmer’s field, presenting the challenge of converting agricultural land into a functional and durable parking facility. This required meticulous planning and execution, considering factors such as drainage, soil composition, and future traffic flow.
Our Approach
Our team began with a comprehensive land survey, analysing the existing terrain, soil conditions, and potential drainage issues. A detailed plan was then developed, encompassing earthmoving, a robust drainage system, and the construction of a durable parking surface.
The project involved significant earthworks, including grading and compacting the land to create a stable base for the car park. A critical element was the implementation of a comprehensive drainage system to prevent waterlogging and ensure the longevity of the paved surface. The car park itself was constructed using a durable material designed to withstand heavy vehicle traffic. Finally, clear line markings, designated parking spaces, and signage were added for efficient traffic flow.
The successful completion of this project delivered a 600+ vehicle car park, significantly increasing Valero Refinery’s parking capacity. This transformation not only provided a practical solution for Valero but also showcased Austwel’s ability to manage large-scale site enabling projects effectively.
